Melasma

The brown pigment melanin is produced due to UV damage. We call it hyperpigmentation when the melanin creates a patchy discolouration of the skin (brown spots) rather than a smooth, even tan.

  • Melasma (AKA chloasma) is a specific kind of uneven brown patches, that can be related to hormones (from pregnancy, the contraceptive pill, or menopause), or just UV rays (sun exposure over time).

  • Brown patches develop on the face, typically
the bridge of the nose, cheeks, forehead and upper lip.

If in doubt about a new brown patch, please see your own doctor to rule out sinister causes such as skin cancer.

Prescriptions can be issued and treatment sold here for Melasma, but not for other forms of hyperpigmentation.

Gold Standard Treatment

Click here to learn more about the Gold Standard Treatment for Melasma. Triple therapy is when we use hydroquinone, tretinoin and a steroid together in a special (prescribed) combination cream – e.g., “Pigmanorm”, or “Tri-Luma”. This is the gold standard treatment for stubborn pigmentation.

This is what can be purchased here, if the doctor prescribes it based on your submitted history and photographs.

Alternative Treatment Options

While prescription triple therapy creams remain the most effective treatment for melasma, alternative options exist. Sun protection is crucial in managing and preventing melasma across all treatment methods. Alternatives include azelaic acid, chemical peels, plant-based extracts, and clinic treatments like IPL and lasers. Topical treatments such as vitamin C and niacinamide can also help reduce hyperpigmentation. However, these alternatives are generally less effective than prescription options.
